Bloomberg Automates Japanese Government Bond Market-on-Close Trading
Bloomberg completed its first fully automated JGB Market-on-Close trade, streamlining a key workflow tied to Japan's BB3P Hikene Trading reference rate.
Bloomberg Electronic Markets has executed the first fully automated Japanese Government Bond (JGB) Market-on-Close trade, marking a significant operational milestone for one of the world's largest sovereign debt markets, the company announced Monday from Tokyo.
The new automated workflow is aligned to BB3P, also known as Hikene Trading, the established Market-on-Close reference rate for JGBs. By connecting the end-of-session pricing mechanism to a fully automated process, Bloomberg aims to reduce manual intervention and the potential for human error in a segment of fixed-income trading that has historically relied on more labor-intensive procedures.

The move reflects a broader industry push to modernize electronic trading infrastructure in Japan's government bond market, where institutional participants face growing pressure to improve execution efficiency and operational resilience. Automating Market-on-Close functionality is widely seen as a step toward tighter alignment between reference rates and actual trade settlement workflows.
Bloomberg's Electronic Markets division has positioned the development as the beginning of an expanded automation effort rather than a one-off achievement. Market participants using the platform stand to benefit from faster, more consistent execution at the close, a period that carries outsized importance for benchmark-sensitive portfolios and index-tracking funds exposed to JGBs.
